Dental FAQs

Why is visiting the dentist so important?

Visiting the dentist regularly helps keep your teeth and mouth healthy and supports the health of your whole body. It helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease, prevents bad breath, keeps your smile bright, and gives you confidence.

My teeth feel fine. Do I still need to see a dentist?

Yes. Problems can exist without symptoms, and your dentist can catch them early. Modern dentistry also offers many ways to improve stained, chipped, missing, or misshapen teeth so you can smile with confidence.

How often should I see the dentist?

Children, teens, and adults should have a checkup at least every six months. Patients at greater risk for oral cancer or gum disease may need to be seen more often.

How should I care for my teeth between checkups?

Brush at least twice a day and floss once; use fluoride toothpaste; avoid sugary foods and tobacco; brush your tongue; and keep your six-month checkups.

What is a cavity?

A cavity is a small hole in the tooth caused by decay, which forms when plaque combines with sugars and starches to produce an enamel-eroding acid. Brushing twice a day and daily flossing help prevent cavities.

What is a filling?

A filling is a material used to restore a tooth after decay is removed. Fillings are placed under anesthetic and can be made from composite (tooth-colored), gold, or ceramic materials.

How often should I brush my teeth?

At least twice a day, for about a minute on the top teeth and a minute on the bottom, using a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste. Don’t forget to brush your tongue.

When should I change my toothbrush?

Every three months for most people, and every four to six weeks if you have gum disease. Replace your toothbrush after an illness, and rinse it with hot water after brushing.

What is gum disease?

Also known as periodontal disease, it is caused mostly by untreated plaque and bacteria. Gingivitis is the early, treatable stage; advanced gum disease leads to permanent tooth and bone loss. Watch for red, bleeding, or swollen gums, bad breath, loose teeth, and receding gums.

At what age should my child first see a dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first visit by age one, followed by regular checkups every six months.

If I have braces, do I still need checkups every six months?

Yes — it’s even more important, because food can get caught where a toothbrush can’t reach. Your dentist works with your orthodontist to keep your teeth healthy during treatment.
