Pediatric dentistry
A child’s first visit to the dentist should be enjoyable. Children fear the unknown, so our office uses pleasant, simple, non-frightening words to describe each treatment and helps your whole family feel at ease. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children visit the dentist by their first birthday.
When new teeth arrive
Primary teeth begin to erupt between six and twelve months of age and continue until about age three, for a total of 20 primary teeth. To ease teething discomfort, gently rub the gums with a clean finger or a cool, wet cloth. Permanent teeth begin erupting at age six.
Healthy oral hygiene habits
- Brush as soon as the first tooth arrives, using a rice-grain smear of fluoride toothpaste up to age three and a pea-sized amount afterward
- Brush after breakfast, lunch, dinner, and at bedtime
- Supervise and assist young children with brushing
- Begin flossing when your dentist recommends it
Preventing tooth decay
Children should visit the dentist every six months for cleanings and checkups. We recommend fluoride treatments twice a year and dental sealants to protect the deep grooves of the teeth where decay often begins.
